BlackBerry Onxy 9020 Pictured With Optical Trackpad

Just simply more photographic confirmation that the coming BlackBerry Onyx 9020 will have the optical trackpad, like the 8520 device.

The picture of above show the Onyx 9020 (left) and the Gemini 8520 (right). I’ve heard nice things about the optical trackpad from those using it, and it all reminds me of RIM’s move a few years ago from the side trackwheel to the front and center trackball and all the hoop-la that caused among trackwheel devotees. So, is this the beginning of a new pathwith the TrackPad—the end of the Trackball?

“They’ll get my trackwheel when they pry my cold carpal-tunel-led thumbs from it,” I recall reading. Oh I expect the naysayers to surface about the optical trackpad as well.

I just want to know if the trackpad can change colors from the native OS, or will new apps like “PaintMyPad” (BlingBall) and “ColorPad “(ColorPearl) be necessary?

The Best NoteBook

Tom Yagerof InfoWorld is all praises for the new 15″ MacBook Pro. Well almost all praises. There are some minor flaws in an otherwise great notebook.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro is the best of the tier-one commercial notebooks, full stop. My two complaints — that the SD card sticks out of its slot and the USB ports remain too close together — are overshadowed by the new display, seven-hour battery, faster CPU, and the fact that there is an SD card slot. There are cheaper notebooks, but I’d challenge you to find one that’s faster, quieter, and better built than MacBook Pro.

I have personally been using the first gen of the 15″ Unibody MacBook Pros and apart from the battery life I’m quite happy with it. It’s truly one of the best built laptops I’ve owned. With the new models, my battery complaints have most likely been answered.

I honestly think that the MacBook Pro is quite possibly the best notebook around, be it PC or Mac. Sure there are faster, more powerful notebooks. Alienware comes to mind but non as refined and well rounded as the MacBook Pro. It simply looks and performs well.

IE8, Firefox 3 and Chrome Processor Overhead

After speaking with a friend of mine and seeing him use Chrome, I decided to give it another try. The reason I stopped using it before is because I couldn’t believe it wouldn’t work with my Google toolbar and import all my favorites to be used.

Combine the lack of Google Toolbar support, along with missing a number of my Firefox extensions I’ve become dependent on and I just couldn’t make the full switch.

My friend said he felt the same way, but forced himself to use it for awhile and see if he could be productive without the extensions. He decided the speed increases in the browser were worth the lack of extensions. He still has Firefox installed on his machine, but it’s not his default browser. He uses Firefox when he needs to use one of his extensions.

I’m not sure I notice a huge speed increase on most sites, but as to be expected, Google sites do load significantly faster in my opinion. What I started to become more curious about was which browser had less of a processor footprint on the machine while running.

I decided to open the same page in each browser and then take a look at the memory and CPU usage for each in Windows Task Manager. Here are the results:

  • Firefox 3.0: 04 CPU / 181,020 K Memory
  • Internet Explorer 8: 00 CPU / 85,080 K Memory
  • Google Chrome: 00 CPU / 27,300 K Memory

The results weren’t really shocking. I expected Firefox to be heavy because of all the extensions I’m using. Chrome would be light because there’s nothing running but the browser itself. IE8 sits in the middle.

I’ll keep playing with Chrome, but I still don’t see it replacing Firefox for me anytime soon.

USB Armageddon Hub

Picture the scene: you've had been a long, grinding day slaving over a hot set of spreadsheets. The office kettle is broken. The canteen closed early. And all you've had to eat all day is half a limp sandwich and a few crumbs from the bottom of Janice-from-Accounts' crisp packet. Then, just as you're about to save your entire day's spreadsheeting work, there's a power cut...

It's days like these that prompted the creation of the USB Armageddon Hub. Days when you want to tear your hair out and shriek 'Armageddonouttahere' at the very top of your voice. Days when flicking a switch, turning a key and pressing a big read button to destroy the world actually seems like a decent idea.

So let's all calm down and look at this rationally. The Hub - there are four USB sockets on board - enables one to connect this sublime tension-relieving, mirth-creating device to one's PC. The thinking is that by going through the motions of releasing a nuclear first strike, one will let off a bit of steam. And how.

The hub looks frighteningly realistic. It's solidly, built, too - enabling one to vent one's inner anger on it. And it saves it's coup de grace for the last moment, when all keys have been turned, switches flicked and buttons depressed... it emits a massive honk. Thereby saving the world from certain destruction and guaranteeing laughs all round. You hero.

Features:

  • Requires a spare USB port
  • Does not actually instigate global thermonuclear war

Notebook Portable Flat-Folding Bbq

Picture the scene. It's the height of summer, or what passes for summer. You're off to the park with your chums. You've just had a big night out and you've got the serious 'munchies', as we believe it's called. You now have a choice. Run off down to the Co-op for a few tubes of Pringles... or run off down to the Co-op for a few chicken drumsticks, sausages, veggie skewers and massive fat burgers. At Gadgetshop HQ, we know which sounds infinitely more appealing, which is why we searched high and low for this intriguing little contraption.

It's a compact, folding barbecue that's designed to be taken anywhere. Here's how it works: 1. Fold it out. 2. Fill it up. 3. Light it up. And that's it. No complex gas bottles, no heavy lifting and no rummaging around B&Q for those 'instant' types that you can use once and once only.

Now the spirit of summer can join you wherever you are, or even sit permanently in the boot of your car, ready for action whenever the mood takes you. Fully collapsing to just a few inches thick, it's ultra-light and ultra-portable yet robust and sturdy wherever you choose to put it. Just plonk it down, light it up and you're a twisted firestarter, as my nephew likes to put it.

Ozone Inflatable Lounger - With Built In Speakers

Naturally, sailing has its hazards. One such hazard is sinking. Should you find yourself knee deep in water, we recommend this: the Ozone Inflatable Lounger. As you may have observed, the Ozone Inflatable Lounger is inflatable. Thus, it will give you the buoyancy you need to float safely to shore. But it also has another desirable feature to make you time at sea more enjoyable: two speakers moulded into its lining which you can plug your i-Pod, TV, MP3 player, or CD player into - providing, that is, it didn't go down with the boat.As you'd expect, the Ozone Inflatable Lounger is easy to inflate and deflate. And it does not need batteries or power cables.

The speakers take their power straight from the device to which they're connected.Of course, it's exceptionally agreeable on the eye too. Still snapshots of all manner of exciting technological wizardry. And unfathomable instructions DVDs from those clever little Japanese. There's just one problem. How to convert and store it all.
As this is gadgetshop, a common-or-garden filing cabinet simply wouldn't do. In search of a fully digital solution, we chanced upon the awe-inspiring, multi-format Neuros OSD - which enables one to archive one's video content from a whole number of different sources.

One, two. One, two. Check, check. Two, two. Now getting nifty on the decks is child's play thanks to the awe-inspiringly innovative Computer DJ Kit from the audio boffins at Ion. It takes the analogue chore of lining up separately spinning plastic discs and digitizes the whole messy business.

This complete kit has everything a self-respecting dude could need to play MP3s, WMAs, WAVs and other music files straight from PC. Mini Kin Wind Powered Charger

We do all know what it's like. No, really. Even those of use at gadgetshop HQ have had linguistic difficulties and communications conundrums to contend with in our past lives. And there surely is no conundrum more dashed difficult to solve than the mobile phone that's about to run out of juice. Until now, that is.

i3G Battery Pack

The ayes have it. Or should that be the i-s have it. For anytime we see i-something on a new product in the loading bay here at gadgetshop HQ, we strongly suspect it might have something to do with the now ubiquitous iPod. We also strongly suspect that anyone who by now does not have one has, quite simply, thought about it but decided against.

However, if you're one of the millions who now have an iPod and have become dangerously addicted to its crisp, clear sound, you may become slightly frustrated when the battery decides to run out in the middle of you getting down to your block rockin' beats. Enter the the i3G Power Station.

Now don't be fooled by the name, we're not suggesting you cart around an entire power plant in your boot. No, this particular power station is somewhat more portable, fitting neatly into one's pocket. The i3G is a handy pocket-sized iPhone or iPod backup battery pack.

It's rechargeable via the same USB cable that you use to charge your iPhone or iPod and gives loads of extra backup power for when you're on the road, abroad, locked in the loo, or any other time when normal charging facilities aren't available.

The i3G incorporates a rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery that can give up to 250 hours extra standby time, up to 5 hours talk time or up to 20 hours extra music playback time. Your iPhone/Pod just plugs straight into it, as if it were a docking station, and as it's wireless and compact, you can even carry on using it as normal.

And when you do find somewhere to plug in, the i3G Power Station can even be plugged in with the iPhone/iPod attached so that both the Power Station and the iPod or iPhone can replenish their battery reserves.

So what more could you ask for. Simply pop it in and pump it up. Then it's get down, daddy-o, whether you're grooving to Level 42 on the 7:42 to Tungsten, or rockin on' to 54321 on the M876. Wonderful.
